The Girard Table, designed in 1948 for Knoll is a classic in every sense of the word. Girard's designs defined a new kind of "opulent modernism," a look that became synonymous with 1960s America.

The Design

With a background in architecture, Alexander Girard would go on to become a respected textile designer, notably revitalizing the muted, somber tones associated with textile design of prior decades, with a fresh and vibrant color palate. Girard was the first modern designer to define textiles as being more than just functional and to further emphasize form through the application of color and pattern.

While the Girard Table appears to be a fairly simple coffee table, the asymmetry of the tabletop speaks volumes as to Girard's skill as a designer. The piece reflects the mid-century aesthetic of clean lines, organic shapes and Girard's view that "art is only art when it is synonymous with living."
